Burton Silverman

Burton Silverman is regarded by many as one of the premier realist American painters.. In 1961 he along with 10 other young realist artists pioneered the validity of Realism at a time when virtually all of American art seemed devoted to post-Cezanne modernism and non objective painting, His first one-man exhibition took place in 1956 at the Davis Galleries in New York City. Since that time Mr. Silverman has had 31 solo shows in New York as well as in Boston, Philadelphia ,San Francisco, Denver and Washington, D.C. He has appeared in numerous national and international exhibitions including the Mexico City Museum of Art, the Royal Academy of Art in London, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Academy of Design and regional exhibits throughout the U.S. He has won 32 major prizes from annual exhibitions at the National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society and the Butler Institute of American Art. He was awarded a Silver Medal from the AWS in 1995. The National Academy of Design honored him with its Berkelson Prize in 1997and 2005 and Joseph Isidor Medal in 1993.

His paintings are represented in almost two dozen public collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The New Britain Museum, the Mint Museum, the Denver Art Museum, the Columbus Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art and the National Portrait Gallery.

His work is included in numerous private collections both in the U.S. and Europe. In May 2004 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Portrait Society of America for lifetime achievement in figurative art.

In 2002 he received an Honorary Doctorate from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco.

In January and February of 1999, the Butler Institute of American Art held a 25-year retrospective exhibition of his work titled Sight and Insight; the Art of Burton Silverman. The exhibit also traveled to the Brigham Young Museum in Utah (May, 1999.)

In 2006 theDelaware Art Museum hosted the exhibiton "Glorious Dignity:" Drawings of the Montgomery Bus Boycott by Harvey Dinnerstein and Burton Silverman. This exhibit was also hosted by the Montgomery Museum of Art. Montgomery,AL in 2006 A full monograph and catalog accompanied this major exhibition.

A retrospective Exhibition of his drawings along with a new monograph, entitled the Intimate Eye: the Drawings of Burton Silverman opened in 2006 at the Brigham Young Museum and is currently on view at the Lyme Academy of Art College of Fine Arts in Connecticut

He has presented slide lectures in museums and art schools across the country on Realism in the age of Modernism in the 20th century. His two prior books on painting as well as the current monographs, have reached audiences in Europe, Australia, Asia and South America. He has also authored articles and has been featured in art magazines and journals including Art News, Book World, the Artist's Magazine, the American Arts Quarterly, Art Talk and International Artist

Silverman's home and studio are in New York City.
